1.1.3Graphic Features
Checked against the photographs in the Mainzer Fotoarchiv. – The first two signs of ša-ar-ri-ya-ni-in at KUB 35.88 iii 11’ are written over erasure. – Contra CLL:190, ša-ri-ya-ni-in at KUB 35.89, 11’ is not preceded by another ša-, i.e. the form is not reduplicated. The second half of that sign, still visible after the break, was erased. It was not a ša-, as becomes obvious from the two Winkelhaken, which are aligned on a diagonal line (different from the two Winkelhaken in the following ša-). – The restoration ša-a-ri-⸢ia⸣-[ni-in-zi?] as acc. pl. at KBo 29.49 i 7’ (DCL:s.v.) is less than assured; cf. also ša-a-r[i- at KBo 29.50 obv. 4’.

1.1.4Meaning
The context of šar(r)iyan(i)- indicates that it represents a tool similar to a comb and probably used together with the comb to magically comb away the illnesses of the new-born child. Accordingly, DLL:86 offers a generic translation ‘objet de toilette’, followed in HHw:145, whereas Melchert (CLL:190, similar DCL:s.v.) only comments: “Implement used by birthing nurse.” Yakubovich (pers. comm.), building on the contextual information, translates ‘scraper’. Modifying his suggestion, a curry comb is deemed more likely here, being closer to a comb. Also, it would fit better with the context of the putative cognate Hitt. šarā(i)-(mi) (CHD Š:238, then not ‘to unravel’, but ‘to currycomb’).

1.1.5Stem
The consistent spelling with singleton -n- in the noun and its derived verb šāriyani-(ti) argues against the otherwise straightforward analysis as a noun in -ann(i)-. Since noun stems in -an(i)- are attested in Luwian (e.g. tappān(i)-, ḫalḫalzān(i)-, māššan(i)-, etc.), this can be regarded as the better option.
