1.1.4Meaning

The word appears in a list between magically affected body parts and other bodily features, e.g., alam-ša mi-i-ša-an-za ḫa-aš-ša ḫal-ḫal-za-ni-in ú-wa-ra-an-na-ḫi-ša i-ú-na-ḫi-ša la-al-pí-in ku-wa-an-na-ni-in ma-aš-ša-na-al-li-in kaskal-an KUB 35.45 ii 22–24 ‘figure, flesh (and) bones, ḫ., capacity to speak, capacity to walk, eyelash, (eyebrow), divine path’ (šalli aniur, CTH 761; cf. Starke 1985b: 152f., Kammenhuber 1986a:88-92), which led Carruba 1969b:71 n. 51 and Puhvel 1988a to assume a body part. They suggested further an interpretation as ‘shoulder’ (Carruba: ‘shoulder’ or ‘head’) on account of the putative cognate ḫalḫaldān(a)-, also a body part, and more specifically one on which a vessel could be placed (nu-za a-ru-na-aš DUGḪAB.ḪAB-x[                 ]x ḫal-ḫal-da-a-ni-iš-ši da-iš “and the Sea place the DUGḪAB.ḪAB-vessel ... on its (own) ḫalḫaldān(a)-,” KUB 36.44 rev. 7’f.). Oettinger 2016a:276-278 adds that the reduplicated root with its likely iterative semantics supports the idea of a body part. The same translation is offered in Berman 1972a:37, Puhvel 1988aHED H:22, Pecchioli Daddi & Polvani 1990a:64, Poetto 1995a:31-33, Melchert 2003f:286f. (considering also ‘loins’ as an alternative). However, HW 2nd ed. Ḫ:29f. and Ünal 2007a:148 reject the equation of the two nouns without argument. Indeed, definite proof for semantic identity is lacking in view of the very different contexts and that of ḫalḫalzān(i)- being uninformative. No translation in Otten 1953a:64, DLL:38, Hoffner 1998b:27; generic ‘(a body part)’ in CLL:47, HHw:36, Yakubovich 2014a:285; implausible Carruba 1990a:250f.

1.1.5Stem

Obviously, ḫalḫalzān(i)- features the reduplication of the root (cf. Puhvel 1988a:256f., HED H:22, Oettinger 2016a:276-278). The same applies to Hitt. ḫalḫaldān(a)-. Therefore, while an exact semantic match of ḫalḫalzān(i)- and ḫalḫaldān(a)- remains unproven, a common base *ḫalḫal-t- can be assumed for both stems as well as for Hitt. ḫalḫal-t-umar ‘shoulder’ (see Melchert 1983a:13f., Kimball 1999a:394). If correct, ḫalḫalzān(i)- contains the complex suffix -zan- (< *-t-i̯-(h1/3)on-) as paralleled in, e.g., Hitt. laḫḫanza(n)- ‘shelduck’ (with *-ont-i̯o-(h1/3)on-) and, at least in part, in the borrowed Luwian personal name mZidanza (with *-ont-i̯o-) (for the suffixes, see Melchert 2003d).

1.2.4Meaning

Like ḫalḫalzān(i)- ‘(a body part)’ in Luwian context, Glossenkeilḫalḫalzana- occurs in a list of body parts in a similar position: ḫa-aš-ta-a-iGlossenkeilḫal-ḫal-za-na-an in-ni-ri-i-inla-ap-li-pí-in za-ma-an-gur ‘bone(s), ḫ., eyebrow, eyelash, beard’ (KUB 24.12 iii 5’-7’; cf. Taracha 2000a:90f.). Therefore, the homonymous words can safely be equated (for a unified treatment, see CLuw. ḫalḫalzān(i)- above).

1.2.6Origin

The Luwian origin assumed for ḫalḫalzana- (and ḫalḫanzana-) emerges from the use of the gloss wedge, its occurrence in Cuneiform Luwian context and the switch between /-lts-/ and /-nts-/ (cf. HED H:22, Puhvel 1988a, Melchert 2003f:286f., Yakubovich 2014a:285, Oettinger 2016a:276-278).
