ifẽn(i)-
‘(unknown)’1.1.1Transmission
This word is found in an inscription dated to the 4th century BCE on paleographic grounds (Gusmani 1975b:12, 53). In the literature, it has been emended to s!fẽniš in comparison to the word sfẽn(i)- (Gusmani 1980a:96) despite the fragmentary and poorly understood context. Considering that a similar word begins with if..[ (a collation is necessary here) in the following line, it is more prudent not to emend and keep the word as it is, i.e. ifẽniš, despite the doubts expressed by Gusmani 1975b:14, 18. A root if- is securely attested in Lydian; cf. ifro-(d), ifrl(i)- and the personal name Ifes (ifelim ‘I am (a coin) of Ifes’ LW/N 116).

If the word ifẽniš does exist, it represents a formation in -ẽn(i)- c. (Sasseville 2017a:136), most likely designating a person, derived from the root if-.
