/ibamizza(/i)-/, “OCCIDENS”-zi-

‘western’

1.1.1Transmission

This hapax is attested in a single inscription from Maraş, presumably dating to the late 9th century BCE.

1.1.2Forms

dat./loc. sg. /ibamizzi/ “OCCIDENS”-zi-i MARAŞ 7, Side A (Maraş)

The reading of the signs at MARAŞ 7, Side A differs from Hawkins 2000a:279. The inscription is rather unusual in that line A includes a turn at a right angle, and it is not entirely clear what order the signs should be read in. However, a parsing as 〈á-pa-ti “OCCIDENS”-zi-i〉, in which both words are known, is more likely than 〈(“OCCIDENS”)á-pa-zi-i-ti〉, which is unknown; cf. also the doubts expressed by Hawkins himself.

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this word is provisional, because no fully syllabic spelling is available. If, however, the reading of the passage at MARAŞ 7, Side A is correct, the proposed shape represents the most likely interpretation.

[AH.B.]

1.1.4Meaning

The meaning of this word is inferred from its spelling and assumed morphology. The context of attestation is too fragmented to provide any further information except for fitting the assigned meaning easily. MARAŞ 7, Side A: […] x x á-pa-ti “OCCIDENS”-zi-i “LOCUS”-lá/í-ti (PONERE+MI)tu-wa/i-i[a …], approx. /… abatti ibamizzi alanti tuwaya/, perhaps translating as ‘He puts … to/for his western place’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:279).

[AH.B.]

1.1.5Stem

If the shape proposed for the stem is correct, this adjective is likely built with the suffix /-izza(/i)-/ found with ethnica, cf. e.g. Melchert 2003b:197. The also attested noun /ibam(i)-/ ‘west’ can be assumed as the derivational base.
