1.1.2Forms

nom. or acc. pl. kaττadmẽs LW 10.8 (Sardis)

It is uncertain whether kaττadmẽs should be interpreted as subject or direct object, but in either case its plural interpretation is assured on morphosyntactic grounds.

1.1.3Meaning

The noun kaττadmẽ- represents the synchronic derivative of kaττi- ‘to approve (vel sim.)’, therefore the meaning ‘decree’ (vel sim.) is the default solution. Within the context, it seems to be modified by the adjective ciwνal(i)-, which suggests that we are dealing with some sort of divine instructions (cf. Melchert 2004b:141). The earlier suggestion ‘lower inscription’ (Gusmani 1964a:149) predicated upon the presumed genetic relationship of Lyd. kaττadmẽ- and šadmẽ- and cannot be maintained as long as one separates these nouns (cf. šadmẽ-).

[I.Y.]

1.1.4Stem

The stem kaττadmẽ- is derived with the suffix -mẽ- from the base *kat-šad-; cf. Melchert 2004b:141f., Yates 2021a.
