1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this word is partly unknown, because its only attestation at TELL AHMAR 6, §30 uses the logogram (sign *300) to cover part of the phonological shape of the word. So far, has not been linked to any syllabic value. The sign is a mainstay of the semantic field of (male) progeny with HLuw. /hams(i)-/ ‘grandson’, HLuw. /hamsukkalla-/ ‘great-grandson’, and HLuw. /hassu-/ ‘family’.

1.1.4Meaning

Even though the word is attested but once, its general meaning is clear from both its spelling and its context of attestation. Since the logogram occurs with kinship terms mostly relating to the next generation, it is likely to fall within the same semantic range. Moreover, the context at TELL AHMAR 6, §30 is part of the protasis of a curse formula: NEG2-a-pa-wa/i Iha-mi-ia-ta-sa-na NEPOS-sa-ta-ni-i kwa/i-i-sa *a-MALUS-wa/i-za a-tá POST-ni (COR.ANIMA)za+ra/i-ti-ti-i, approx. /naba=wa Hamiyattassan …-stani kwis attuwal=za anta appanni zartitti/, meaning ‘(He who shall erase Hamiyatta’s name), or who shall desire evil for Hamiyatta’s progeny, (for him may this Storm-god Tarhunt of the Army become a lion)’ (cf. Hawkins 2006a:16f.).

1.1.5Stem

In so far as it can be said from the only available attestation, the immediate derivational suffix for this noun appears to be /-an-/ (for which see e.g. Melchert 2003b:197) perhaps with i-mutation, and it is thus likely a common gender noun, although that cannot be proved at present.
