1.1.3Meaning
The verb kupri-(ti) in TL 44c.47 denotes a favorable action of the god towards the Lycian king, whereas in TL 44d.16 it is used as an attribute to urasli ‘for the great offering’. Shevoroshkin 1969a:265 suggests the meaning ‘to desire’ on etymological grounds with Lat. cupio ‘to desire’. Melchert (DLL:118) slightly modifies the meaning to ‘to choose’, which belongs to the same semantic sphere (thus also Shevoroshkin 2014a:233f., Schürr 2016d:163). Sasseville 2021a:157 takes over the semantic interpretation of kupri-(ti) as ‘to love, choose’ and brings further contextual evidence, especially its contrast with puke-(ti) ‘to hate’.
