1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this lexeme is provisional. If it is indeed related to the family around /hadi-(ti)/ ‘to proclaim, speak’, the suggested form as /hadi(ya)-/ is correct. The spelling does not involve the logogram (sign *22), which would serve as a more explicit link to the word family. In case it does not belong to /hadi-(ti)/ etc., the attested spelling can represent other phonological shapes such as /hattiya-/ or /hantiya-/, cf. the discussion of the meaning below.

1.1.4Meaning

The meaning tentatively suggested for this word is based on its possible connection with the word family around /hadi-(ti)/ ‘to proclaim, speak’ (Yakubovich, pers. comm.). At ASSUR letter a, §12, the context fits the meaning, but does not force it: ha-ti-ia-pa-wa/i-mu (“*286.*317”)wa/i+ra/i-ma-a za-ia VIA-wa/i-ni, approx. /hadiya=ba=wa=mu warma zaya harwanni/, translating as ‘Send me these aforementioned (?) warma-s!’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:534).

In contrast, Hawkins 2000a:544 suggests the meaning ‘special (?)’, cautiously linking the word to /hanti(ya)-/ ‘first’, which is technically possible, but less likely from a graphematic point of view, since /hanti(ya)-/ is invariably spelt either with the logogram or the numeral sign for ‘one’.

1.1.5Stem

Provided the form is analysed and attributed correctly, the word appears to be an adjective in /-i(ya)-/. It can either derive from the root /had-/ or, more likely, the nominal stem /hadi-/ resulting from a reinterpretation of the noun HLuw. /hadid-/ ‘proclamation, declaration, word’.
