1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this word is reasonably certain, provided that the link proposed by Melchert 1988b:240f. to the family around /hadi-(ti)/ ‘to proclaim, speak’ holds true, despite a lack of the logogram (sign *22). The stem-final stop of /hadid-/ is elided in the endingless nom./acc. sg., before the neuter particle /=sa, =za/ is affixed (cf. Melchert 2003b:182f.). Only further paradigmatic evidence can show if the stem-final /d/ is still present in the oblique case forms, or whether it has been lost altogether, cf. also the discussion of the stem below.

1.1.4Meaning ‘proclamation, declaration, word’

Based on the putative connection to the word family around /hadi-(ti)/ ‘to proclaim, speak’, Melchert 1988b:240f. proposes the meaning ‘command, solemn pronouncement’,Hawkins 2000a:172f. gives preference to the possible, but less likely link with /hanti(ya)-/ ‘first’ and suggests ‘preferred’ vel sim. here adjusted to ‘proclamation, declaration, word’ to maintain a closer connection to the verb. The context of attestation at KÖRKÜN, §3 runs: wa/i-mu-ta á-mi-ti “COR”-na-ti (“COR”)ha-pa-zú+ra/i-wa/i-ti DOMINUS-na-sa ha-ti-sá NEG<2> ma-nu-ha zi-la (“PES”)hi-nu-ha (DEUS)ku+AVIS-pa-pa-sa-ti LEPUS+ra/i-ia-ti TONITRUS-hu-ta-sa-ti-ha, approx. /wa=mu=tta ammidi attanadi habanzuwaladi nannas hadi=sa na manuhha zila hinuhha Kubabassadi tabariyadi Tarhuntassadi=ha/, meaning ‘I, by my devoted soul, did not move my lord’s word in any way ever, by (the goddess) Kubaba’s command and (the Storm-god) Tarhunt’s’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:172).

1.1.5Stem

A neuter gender noun, the word represents an abstract in /-id-/, formed either from the verb /hadi-(ti)/ ‘to proclaim, speak’, or directly from the root (Melchert 1988b:240f.).
