1.1.4Meaning

This Luwian verb is directly equivalent to the Hittite formation kālutiye/a-(mi) ‘to treat in succession, jointly (vel sim.)’ (cf. ‘(Gottheiten) reihum (be)opfern’ in HW 2nd ed. K:49, ‘to treat jointly’ in HED K:34). A similar meaning is to be assumed for the Luwian verb in Hittite contexts (HEG A-K:470, similarly ‘to make the rounds of’ in CLL:99), cf. e.g. the context on KUB 20.59, where the direct object is DINGIRMEŠ ḫu-u-ma-an-ti-iš ‘all the gods’. The notion of ‘succession’ or ‘joint treatment’ originates in the base noun Luw. kālu(t)t(i)- (also loaned into Hittite, forming the base of the verb kālutiye/a-(mi)), which has the basic meaning ‘circle’ (also in the sense of German ‘Kreis’, i.e. a group, see Laroche 1959a:54, HEG A-K:470, HED K:33, CLL:99, Carruba 2000c:60, Melchert apud Sasseville 2021a:225 n. 15).

1.1.6Origin

The Luwian provenance of this word is confirmed by the strictly Luwian 3sg. pres. ind. act. verbal ending -tti and by the single Glossenkeil attestation (see also Laroche 1959a:54, Oettinger 1979a:494, Melchert 2005a:449, van den Hout 2006a:254).
