1.1.2Forms

3sg. pret. ind. act. (?) ka-lu-ut-ta-ni-ta KUB 25.37 ii 33´ (CTH 771, NS)
2sg. impv. act. ka-lu-ut-ta-an-ni KUB 25.37 ii 35´ (CTH 771, NS)

Melchert (CLL:99) restores the 3sg. pret. ind. act. form as ⟨ka-lu-ut-ta-ni-<it>-ta⟩, i.e. with an unlenited ending (see Stem). It is also possible that the form is 2sg. pret. ind. act., which would agree well with the other 2sg. forms in the context. Note also the contrast between the fortis -nn- in the 2sg. impv. act. and the lenis -n- in the 3sg. pret. ind. act.

1.1.3Meaning

Both contexts in which this verb appears are fragmentary and thus largely uninformative with regard to semantic interpretation. A radical connection with the verb kaluti-(ti) ‘to treat in succession, jointly (vel sim.)’ suggests a similar meaning for kaluttan(n)i- (thus Laroche 1959a:54, Oettinger 1979a:494, CLL:99), but this cannot be verified on the basis of the textual evidence.

1.1.4Stem

The attestation in the 3sg. pret. ind. act. seems to suggest a leniting i-stem. However, Melchert (CLL:99) restores an unleniting stem in comparison to other verbs ending in -ani-(ti) (see Oettinger 1979a:494 and Sasseville 2021a:148-151). The verb most likely bears some relation to a nominal base kalu(t)t(i)- ‘circle’ (Laroche 1959a:54), although it is not clear whether the sequence -an(n)i- represents a verbal suffix or the stem of an unattested base word, itself a further derivative of kalu(t)t(i)-.

[O.B.]

For the derivational base, see kalu(t)t(i)-.
