1.1.4Meaning

The word galuttaima occurs in a very obscure context, designating ‘bronze daggers’ (GÍR.ZABARḪI.A) that are apparently ‘burning’ (ú-[ra-an-ta]). Given the meaning of the base kalu(t)t(i)- ‘circle’ and the applicability on daggers, Melchert (CLL:99) tentatively suggests a meaning ‘marked with circles’ (followed by Tischler 2008a:77). While this analysis cannot be excluded, it is likewise unverifiable – pending further evidence the meaning of the word is better treated as unknown.

1.1.5Stem

The most straightforward analysis of galuttaima/i- seems to be as a participle of a base verb in either -(a)i-(di) or in -ā(i)-(di) (Sasseville 2021a:81). The latter analysis is perhaps preferable under the assumption that the base is a collective formation of kalu(t)t(i)- ‘circle’ (motivated by kaluti-(ti) already serving as the denominative to the i-stem and the semantic interpretation of Melchert, see Meaning), but this is unverifiable pending further evidence. The possibility of a denominative adjective in -aimma/i- cannot be excluded either (CLL:99).

[O.B.]

For the derivational base, see kalu(t)t(i)-.
