1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation
With the word represented mainly logographically, its phonological interpretation remains obscure, not least because its meaning is difficult to grasp, cf. the discussions below.
The logogram PRAE (sign *14) is usually employed for the word family around HLuw. /pari/ ‘before’; it is not clear if the same phonetic value should be assumed here.
[AH.B.]
1.1.4Meaning
The word has yet to be fixed with a meaning. If the choice of PRAE should signify a link with the word family around the adverb /pari/ ‘before’, it may mean ‘the former, the aforementioned’ vel sim. The top of the stele of KULULU 4, §15-16 reads: za-wa/i STELE Ihu-li-sa4 PONERE-ta Iru-wa/i-sa8 FRATER.LA-sa8 INFANS.NI-sa8 PRAE-sa8-pa-wa/i (“*476”)LOCUS-li-ia-ta, approx. /za=wa wani=za Hulis tuwatta Ruwas…-nas nimuwizzas …-s=ba=wa aliyatta/, meaning ‘Huli, the son of Ruwa’s brother, put this stele (up), and/but PRAE2 (i.e. the former?) (was?) buried’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:446).The verbal ending seems to be a 3sg. pret. act., but depending on the meaning of the clause, it may well have to be interpreted as medio-passive. The endings of the medio-passive are optional for the preterite, cf. Yakubovich 2015b:6.5.
[AH.B.]
1.1.5Stem
Unclear. The word may either be a common gender noun or an adjective inflected as a common gender. The derivational base may or may not be part of the word family around /pari/ ‘before’.
