1.1 Hieroglyphic Luwian

/atri(ya)-/, COR-[x]-i-

‘personal (?)’

1.1.1Transmission

This hapax is attested in a single inscription from Aleppo, probably dating to the 11th century BCE.

1.1.2Forms

nom. sg. c. /atris/ COR-[x]-i-sa ALEPPO 6, §3 (Aleppo)

Underneath the sign at ALEPPO 6, §3, the stone is damaged, leaving enough space for an additional sign, as indicated in the editio princeps by Hawkins 2011b:44. However, it is also possible that the space was not used, and the reading should be changed to 〈COR-i-sa〉. The analysis of this word as an adjective is likely and follows Yakubovich 2017e:s.v., but cf. the discussion of the stem below.

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

With the link to the word family around HLuw. /atr(i)-/ ‘person, self’ quite likely, the phonological interpretation of the present lexeme is reasonably clear. The most straightforward shape is /atri(ya)-/, although a form such as /attani(ya)-/ is not out of the question, either; cf. the discussion by Yakubovich at HLuw. /attan(i)-/ ‘soul, self’ regarding the relationship of /atr(i)-/ and /attan(i)-/.

1.1.4Meaning

The meaning of this word is assigned tentatively based on its likely etymological connections and its context of attestation (see Yakubovich 2017e:s.v.). ALEPPO 6, §3 reads: TONITRUS.HALPA.PA-ní-wa(URBS) (DEUS)TONITRUS *a-mu COR-[x]-i-sa i-zi-ta, approx. /Halpawannis=wa Tarhunzas ammu atris izzitta/, meaning ‘(I honoured the embodiment for my master, the storm-god Tarhunt of Aleppo,) and Tarhunt of Aleppo became personal (?) to me’ (Hawkins 2011b:44f.).The interpretation of the verb as 3sg. pret. med. follows Yakubovich 2020a:468 n. 4. An interpretation as an adjective is the most likely option here.Regarding the form /atris/, Hawkins 2011b:41 at first leaves the clause partly untranslated, but adds (p. 45 addendum), following a suggestion by van den Hout, that it may represent a free-standing genitive. This is morphologically highly unlikely, since the gen. of the i-mutated /atr(i)-/ should be /atras(si)/, yet the attested spelling clearly includes an /i/ here.

[AH.B.]

1.1.5Stem

If the analysis of the word as an adjective is correct, it is likely derived with the productive suffix /-i(ya)-/ from the also attested noun HLuw. /atr(i)-/ ‘person, self’. However, the adjectival interpretation is based mainly on its context at ALEPPO 6, §3, and it should be noted that i-mutation and subsequent contraction render the nom. sg. c of the adjective /atri(ya)-/ and the nom. sg. of the noun /atr(i)-/ looking the same, viz. /atris/.

Outdated is the previously envisaged cognate link with Lyd. arlil(i)- proposed by Yakubovich 2005b:86, since withdrawn by the scholar himself, see Yakubovich 2017c:16 n. 15.
