1.1.3Meaning ‘to cause (sth.) to be paid, to require as payment/penalty’

Savelsberg 1878a:29 assigns the meaning ‘to pay’ based on the fact that the direct object of the verb ttiti in TL 131.4 is an amount of money and that the sentence is a penalty formula (followed by Arkwright 1923a:21, Gusmani 1962a:169). Neumann 1974a:113f. on the other hand assumes rightly that the subject of the sentence in TL 131.4 is not the potential offender, but the deity instead (differently Neumann 2007a:382). Thus, he assigns the meaning ‘to receive (as payment)’ (vel sim.). This contextual interpretation is taken over by Hajnal 1995a:156f., 184, Melchert DLL:65 and Schürr 2005a:141, who all rightly translate ‘to require as payment’ or ‘to cause to pay (a penalty)’. Since the potential offender is not mentioned in the sentence and the direct object is the intended penalty, the verb is better translated as ‘to cause (sth.) to be paid, require as payment’.

The verb tti-(ti) is the reduplicated form of non-attested *ti-, which is found as the base of derivatives such as tija- c. ‘penalty’. The function of the reduplication in this case is understood to express iterativity, since the payment is expected to occur every month (TL 131.4); cf. Heubeck 1985a:41, Dempsey 2015a:255.

1.2 Lycian B

kiki-(ti)

‘to cause (sth.) to be payed’

1.2.1Transmission

This lexeme is found in the poetical inscription engraved on the lion sarcophagus of Antiphellos dated on stylistic grounds to the beginning of the 4th century BCE (Zahle 1979a:318, Mühlbauer 2007a:91).

1.2.3Meaning

Hajnal 1995a:156f. n. 157 plausibly suggests an etymological connection with Lycian A tti-(ti) ‘to cause to be payed’ and assigns the same semantics (likewise DLL:118, Schürr 2005a:141). This is contextually supported by the fact that the subjects of the verb are gods (thus Hajnal ibid.) and the direct object is a sacrifice, i.e. xe/i- ´offering, sacrifice´. Furthermore, the sentence is followed by a direct speech, which contains an imperative form of the verb sla-(ti) ‘to offer (as sacrifice)’. For a summary of the outdated literature see Neumann 2007a:167.

2. Reconstruction

2.1Reconstruction ‘to cause (sth.) to be paid’

Already in the 19th century, an etymological connection with Gk. τίνω ‘to pay’ and Skt. cáyate ‘to punish’ was suggested by Savelsberg 1878a:29, and later on independently by Heubeck 1985a:41. The fact that Lycian A has a t before a front vowel, where Lycian B shows a k, requires the reconstruction of labiovelar *k for Proto-Lycian (Melchert 1994a:284f., Hajnal 1995a:184, 212).

Because of the absence of lenition in the ending of the 3rd person singular, one cannot reconstruct a verb of the mi-conjugation for Proto-Anatolian. Pace Hajnal 1995a:125, LIV2+:378, a pre-form *ki-kéi-ti would have yielded **kikidi in Proto-Lycian. Therefore, the reduplicated stem *kiki- must have inflected according to the ḫi-conjugation, i.e. PA *ki-kói-e(+i). A pre-form *ki-koi̯-ei̯ developed to *ki-kī-ei and then with replacement of the ḫi-ending with the mi-ending the outcome is Proto-Lycian *kiki-ti ‘(s)he causes (sth.) to be paid regularly’. The lack of lenition, i.e. *ki-u̯i- < *ki-gi-, expected in analogy to the reduplication type (*DVDV- > *TVDV-, see Melchert 1994a:300f., cf. Dempsey 2015a:273f.), indicates that the reduplication is late.

The reduplication attested in Lycian A and B is a late process employed for the purpose of expressing iterativity; cf. Dempsey 2015a:325-327. This is supported by the example in TL 131.4, where the referee is expected to do the payment every month. The reconstruction of a non-reduplicated base is also supported by the various derivatives.
