‘to act as priest of the Storm-god’

1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is attested once in the poetical inscription engraved on the lion sarcophagus of Antiphellos, dated on stylistic grounds to the beginning of the 4th century BCE (Zahle 1979a:318, Mühlbauer 2007a:91).

Neumann 2007a:379 reads trqqñtasazi (following Kalinka 1901a:54) and sees an ethnicon in -ze/i- (followed by Gehrisch 2018a:107f.). However, the reading with 〈t〉, which had also been suggested in the 19th century, was eventually confirmed by Schürr 2005a:129.

1.1.4Meaning ‘to perform one’s function as priest of the Storm-god (upon something)’

Both Melchert (DLL:132) and Schürr 2005a:153 rightly see a verbal form. Schürr (ibid.) suggests the meaning ‘to make into something belonging to the Storm-god’. Within the same analysis of the factitive suffix -a-(ti), Sasseville 2021a:54 takes the agent noun trqqñtasa- c. as the derivational base and suggests a slightly meaning with ‘to perform one’s function as priest/disciple of the Storm-god (upon something)’ or ‘to make into a priest/disciple of the Storm-god’. The direct object qirzã, which denotes some kind of property or sanctuary (see Lyc. B qirza-), speaks for the former option. Therefore, we expect the phrase qirzã trqqñtasati to mean ‘He performs his function as priest/disciple of the Storm-god upon the qirza.’

[D.S.]

For the derivational base see Lyc. B trqqñtasa- and the lemma head Lyc. trqqn͂t-.
