1.1.2Forms

acc. pl. NINDAwa-li-pa-i-mi-uš KBo 24.29 ii! 6 (CTH 694, MS)
  NINDAwa-l[i-pa-i-mi-uš] KBo 24.29 ii! 11 (CTH 694, MS)
  NINDAwa-li-pa-i-m[i-uš] KBo 24.29 i 13’ (CTH 693, NS)
unknown NINDAwa-li-pa-i-mi-u[š]/-i[š] KBo 24.24 ii! 9’ (CTH 693, MS)

In spite of the context with NINDAwalipaima/i- two lines earlier, NINDAwa-al-pa-i-m[a- at KBo 24.24 ii! 11’ probably belongs to the derivative NINDAwalpaimann(i)- (see under Lemma) instead, because the forms with -i- in the root yet without -ann(i)- and those without -i-, but with -ann(i)-, are consistently kept separate. Thus, the restoration of HEG W-Z:262 NINDAwa-al-pa-i-m[a-aš is not followed here.

There is possibly another attestation to be found as -l]i-pa-im-mi-i-š[a?] (KBo 39.207 l.col. 4’).

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The assignment of walipaima/i- to the verb *walip- is unproblematic, but its derivative NINDAwalpaimann(i)- shows syncope of -i-. This is unusual for a full phonemic /i/ in Luwian (cf. Melchert 1994a: 275f.). Consequently, the change must be considered indicative of an anaptyctic origin of the vowel (probably in 3-consonant clusters of the base verb before consonantal endings, e.g. *walpti). The prop-vowel would have subphonemic status and therefore be subject to deletion in the suffixed forms.

1.1.4Meaning

The ritual context is inconclusive as to the meaning so that the determinative ninda, which marks the names of pastries, remains the only possible basis for a semantic interpretation.

1.1.5Stem

While no finite forms of the underlying verb *walip- are attested, at least the participle is found substantivized (Meriggi 1980a:343 § 209, Starke 1990a:420 n. 1515, CLL:252).

  1. walpaimann(i)-

1.1.7Origin

The root of the word and its participial suffix -aimma/i- speak for a Luwian origin. This is additionally confirmed by the derivative NINDAwalpaimann(i)- with the productive Luwian diminutive suffix -ann(i)- and by where the word occurs, as it is restricted to rituals of well-known Luwian provenance.
