1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation
The phonological interpretation of this lexeme depends mostly on whether or not one accepts the interpretation advanced by Yakubovich 2019a:554 n. 47 for DOMINUS-ia- as /niya-/ ‘lord’, cf. the discussion there. The stem formation with the adjectival suffix /-i(ya)-/, however, is clear and well-known from many other lexemes; see the discussion of the stem below.
[AH.B.]
1.1.4Meaning
The assigned meaning can be taken as certain. First, the morphology of the word is clear with the suffix /-ai(ya)-/ forming adjectives of appurtenance, and for another, the context supports the interpretation. In MALATYA 1, the syntactic structure clearly puts /niyaiya/ into a modifier position among several other adjectives: za-ia-wa/i (*262)sa-sa-li-ia TONITRUS.HALPA-pa-AVIS3-sa ICRUS+RA/I-sa HEROS MAx.LIx-i(URBS) DOMINUS-ia-ia INFANS.NEPOS-ia MONS.CORNU?.CERVUS3 INFANS-mu-wa/i-ia-ia REX?, translating as ‘These hunting grounds (are those) of Halpasuluba, grandson of Ara the hero of Melid, son of Wasuruntiya, the king’ (see Hawkins 2000a:319f.).

1.1.5Stem
An adjective, this word is built with the suffix /-ai(ya)-/, which attaches to nouns (see e.g. Melchert 2003b:197), the basis here being /niya-/ ‘lord’. Although it is not visible from the attestations, the suffix usually undergoes i-mutation. The adjective is also found in a number of attestations derived from the compound REGIO.DOMINUS /wattani-niya-/ ‘country lord’, i.e. /wattani-niyai(ya)-/.
