1.1.3Graphic Features
Checked against the photographs in the Mainzer Fotoarchiv. – The restoration [na-n]a-am-ma-an at KUB 35.54 iii 17 follows Watkins 1987a:423 and Watkins 1987b:402. Only the last vertical of -n]a- is still visible. – The reading of ⸢na-na?-an?-ta⸣ at KUB 35.100 rev. 1, and hence the assignment to the present lemma, is not entirely assured.

1.1.4Meaning
Based on the context and parallel upamman ‘provided’, it is clear that the participle at KUB 35.54 iii 17 also belongs to a transfer verb: cf. (17)[w]a-a-ar-ša-at-ta íd-ti [na-n]a-am-ma-an (18)[m]un-ša-pa a-a-la-a-ti u-wa-a[-ni-ia-ti] ú-pa-am-ma-an “water is led from the river, and salt is provided by the remote rock face” (KUB 35.54 iii 17f.). Therefore, the restoration of [na-n]a-am-ma-an tentatively accepted here represents a good option. However, it must be emphasized that the connection with nanātti, whose meaning is not confirmed by any contextual clue, is less than assured and the etymological argument (see under Stem) plays an important role in the semantic interpretation.

1.1.5Stem
It seems to be common sense now that nana-(i) is a reduplicated verb deriving from nāi-/niya-(i) ‘to lead’, corresponding to Hitt. nāi-/ne(ya)-(ḫi) ‘to turn’ (CLL:154, HHw:110, Puhvel 2007a:631, HED N:40, Dempsey 2015a:243, Sasseville 2021a:354f.).

2. Reconstruction
2.1Reconstruction
Sasseville 2021a:288f. adduces as a cognate Lyd. nãrs from a stem nãn-(t), which he interprets as a reduplicated formation just like CLuw. nana-(i). If this is correct, this would allow for a Proto-Luwic dating of the reduplicated form of CLuw. nāi-/-iya-(i), i.e. as attested in CLuw. nana-(i), with reinterpretation of the strong stem -ai- as -a- (see Sasseville 2021a:428 with further literature for the similar Hittite phenomenon in e.g. Hitt. mēma-/-i(ya)-(ḫi) ‘to speak’).

For the lemma head see CLuw. nai-/niya-(i).
