1.1.4Meaning

Brosch 2014a:29-31 (followed by Melchert pers. comm.) was able to argue persuasively that, in addition to Hitt. parā tarnumar ‘release’, pariššā- represents another semantic equivalent of Hurr. kirenzi ‘release’. The Hurrian pair of clauses “I shall give it, my town shall not give it, (i.e.) the release” (KBo 32.15 iv 15f.) is translated into Hittite as ú-ga-an pé-e-[eš-k]e-mi pa-ri-iš-ša-a-an am-me-el-ma-a[n u]ru-aš ú-ul pa-a-i “I shall give it, the release, but my town shall not give it” (KBo 32.15 iii 15f.), with a proleptic use of the pronoun in the first, instead of the second clause. The semantic proposal resulting from the contextual analysis is confirmed by the transparent stem formation (see under Stem). Cf. also already Haas 1997a:339f.: “Freilassung”; HHw:s.v.: “Nomen u.B., ‘Freilassung’?, ‘Gefangenenschar’?” and HEG P:465: “‘Gefangenenschar’?”, following with the second suggestion the implausible idea of Neu 1996a:361f.; with false segmentation CHD P:155.

1.1.5Stem

Our understanding of the stem formation goes back to Brosch 2014a:29-31. He analyzes pariššā- as a compound of CLuw. parī ‘away, forth’ and a verbal abstract in -a- derived from CLuw. šā-(i) ‘to release’ (probably with contraction), an exact match of the Hittite verbal noun parā tarnumar ‘release’. This is adopted here.

1.1.6Origin

Brosch 2014a:30f. points out that, on account of the Luwian compound members parī and šā-, the substantive pari-ššā- can also safely be assigned to Luwian. Its occurrence in the MH Hurrian-Hittite bilingual does not constitute an argument against such an assumption, since a Luwianism (the infinitive aršūna) and Hittite forms with the imitation of the Luwian i-mutation (šuppišduwariēš, -iuš) are found in the same text ensemble.

For the lemma heads see CLuw. parī and CLuw. šā-(i).
