‘provisions (?)’

1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme has appeared due to the join between KBo 27.61 + KBo 48.85 made by Sasseville 2021a:563-565 and it hence belongs to a mugawar for the Storm-god of Zippalanda.

nom./acc. coll. p]a-ra-aš-ša-a-at-ta KBo 27.61 + KBo 48.85, 4’ (CTH 756, NS)

1.1.3Graphic Features

Checked against the photographs in the Konkordanz (Mainzer Fotoarchiv). As pointed out by Sasseville 2021a:564 n. 15, there seems to be a small space between p]a-ra-aš and ša-a-at-ta=pa. Nonetheless, the sequence is taken as one word before the sentence initial clitic =pa, since p]a-ra-aš can hardly represent the last word (i.e. a verbal form) of the preceding clause.

1.1.4Meaning

The word ša-a-at-ta was previously considered a form of the verb šā-(i), which is now unlikely with the new join, since it is followed by the particle =pa. Therefore, the clause is more likely to be p]araššātta=pa tappiš šāi?[] ‘The tappiš releases the paraššātta.’. Sasseville 2023b:295f. compares the morphology of paraššātta- with the one of HLuw. /niyassattalla-/ c. (← */niyassatta-/) and suggests a similar derivation, i.e. para-(ti) ‘to carry (off)’ → *parašša-(i) ‘(imperf.)’ → parašš-ā-tta- ‘(action/result noun)’. A different approach would be to assume a univerbation of the preverb para (cf. Hitt. parā) and the action noun of the verb šā-(i) ‘to release’, although this would leave the geminate -šš- unexplained (a similar criticism applies to pariššā-).

Based on the context, Sasseville 2023b:295f suggests the meaning ‘provisions’ comparable to the Hittite expression šarā tiyanda ‘provisions’ (← šarā dāi-/-i(ya)-(ḫi)). This meaning is tentatively followed by Melchert (DCL:s.v.) and also adopted here.

1.1.5Stem

The word paraššātta is likely to be a collective, but more data are required to be absolutely certain. On its derivational chain, see under Meaning.
