1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this word relies on that of its cognate noun /tinant(a)-/ ‘tithe’, see the discussion there. Still, the HLuw. spelling offers more than possible reading, and the underlying shape could also be /tinattissa-/.

1.1.4Meaning

The meaning of this verb is suggested tentatively, based entirely on its morphological structure, because the clause in ÇİFTLİK, §14 containing the only attestation is severely fragmented and not translatable, see Hawkins 2000a:449, 451.Hawkins 2000a translates even more literally: “to tithe”. Since the verb represents a deverbal formation in /-ssa-(i)/ (cf. the discussion of the stem below), its meaning could be imperfective or iterative, i.e. ‘to keep giving a tithe’ in the way of a repeated or even regular sacrifice.

1.1.5Stem

From a morphological point of view, the structure of the verb seems clear. It can ultimately be traced back to the noun /tinant(a)-/ ‘tithe’, but the shape of the stem as /tinantissa-/ (if correct) points to an intervening verb */tinanti-(ti)/, which is otherwise unattested. This fits well with the fact that the suffix /-ssa-(i)/ is usually employed for deverbal formations, cf. Sasseville 2021a:504 incl. n. 14.
