tiwali-

‘(a garden plant)’

1.1.1Transmission

A clear attestation of the lexeme is found in a ritual or festival fragment from the Kizzuwatna tradition, another one, less certain, comes from a Hattian/Hittite text (both NS).

1.1.4Meaning

The word marked with the determinative sar for plants occurs in a list of garden plants (see Berman 1972a:132, HEG T:395, Ünal 2007a:722). Very likely, the word belongs to the  family around the plant name tiwariya- (HHw:178, HEG T:395).

1.1.5Stem

Although for plant names like for other names it is difficult to ascertain an etymology, it is likely that the stem *tiwal(i)- reflected in Hitt. tiwali- provided also the base for tiwali(ya)-, especially in view of the extant plant name tiwariya-.

1.1.7Origin

In general, the scholars who treat the noun tiwali-SAR seem to regard it as a Hittite word, but for the reasons presented under Stem a Luwian origin recommends itself.

[E.R.]

For the lemma head see CLuw. *tiw-.
