‘sun (?)’

1.1.1Transmission

This presupposed hapax is attested in a single inscription from Commagene, dating to the 9th or 8th century BCE.

1.1.2Forms

gen. sg.(?) /tiwadas(sa)/ SOL-tà-sa SAMSAT frag. 1 (Commagene)

The grammatical analysis of the form attested in SAMSAT frag. 1 is to be understood as provisional, because the text is too fragmented to permit any certainty in this matter. Instead, the identification relies on the fact that the form is without i-mutation, which would be expected to surface in a non-oblique case form.

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

Despite a single and merely partially syllabic attestation, the phonological interpretation of this lexeme is quite clear. Not only is the logogram found more than 40 times representing the name of the sun-god /Tiwad-/, but the use of the sign 〈tà〉 shows the lenited quality of the dental (see Rieken 2008b:643).

1.1.4Meaning

The single attestation of this noun appears on a fragment of an inscription, and the remaining legible words cannot be reliably assigned to clauses. It is possible that a new clause starts about a third into the fragment: wa/i-tà CUM-ni SOL-tà-sa kwa/i-ti x-sa á-pa-ti-i […], approx. /wa=ada anni tiwadas(a) kwatti …-s abatti … /, but the passage is too fragmented for a semantic interpretation. What seems clear, however, is that the word is not preceded by the logogram , suggesting that the reference is merely the sun here rather than the sun-god.

[AH.B.]

1.1.5Stem

Although not provable on the basis of the attested form, it is assumed that the word is a common gender noun like its polyseme /Tiwad-/, the name of the sun-god. Likewise unclear from the attested forms is whether or not the noun inflects as a consonantal stem or has been shifted to a different stem class, most likely by i-mutation. Only further evidence can shed light on the matter.
