prijedulis-

‘(unknown)’

1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is attested in the inscription of the inscribed pillar of Xanthos, dated contextually to shortly after the ascension of Artaxerxes II in 405-404 BCE and stylistically to around 400 BCE (Borchhardt & Eichner 1997-1999a:19f.).

1.1.2Forms

dat./loc. pl. (?) prijedulise TL 44d.11 (Xanthos)

The grammatical assignment as dat./loc. pl. agreeing with trm͂mile follows Melchert (DLL:125) and Gehrisch 2018a:93. Schürr 2018b:76 sees instead a dative singular in -e.

1.1.3Graphic Features

Scholars have attempted to divide this long word into two, i.e. prije (e)dulise (Kalinka 1901a:107, DLL:125, Gehrisch 2018a:93), but this is not convincing and therefore the word is left at is for now.

1.1.4Meaning

Schürr 2018b:76 interprets prijedulise as a derivative in -is- comparable to zemuris ‘from Limyra’, but the word here is hardly an ethnicon because of trm͂mile ‘Lycians’. Therefore, it is more likely to represent something that is “Lycian”. An etymological relationship with prijeli(je)- should not be overlooked. Further speculations are offered by Shevoroshkin 1971a:210, Shevoroshkin (apud Neumann 2007a:281f.), and Gehrisch 2018a:93.
