1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The investigation of the use of 〈tà〉 revealed that there is no link between the present word and the verb /hatta-/ ‘to demolish’, since 〈tà〉 represents a lenited dental, i.e. /d/ (Rieken 2008b:644). Instead, a likely cognate is the CLuw. participle ḫadamma/i-; cf. CLL:64). Perhaps, there is an etymological connection with HLuw. /had(a)ra(/i)-/ ‘life’, but in the absence of more evidence, this remains speculation for now.

The meaning of the logogram *464 has so far eluded scholars. Its shape resembles an upright double cross.

1.1.4Meaning

The negative connotation of this adverb is immediately clear from its contexts of attestation, though its precise meaning can only be guessed at. In the HLuw. corpus, the adverb is limited to occurrences in the apodoses of curse formulae, where it accompanies the verb /tarp(a)i-(di)/ ‘to trample’. If the word should indeed turn out to be related to /had(a)ra(/i)-/ ‘life’, a meaning such as ‘vigorously’ would seem indicated. Cf. e.g. ŞIRZI, §6: á-pa-ti-pa-wa/i+ra/i-ta i-mára/i-sá (DEUS)CERVUS3-ti-sá (*464)ha+ra/i-ma PES2.PES-pi-tu, approx. /abatti=ba=wa=di=tta immaras Runtis hadamma tarpidu/, meaning ‘(He who damages this open country road), him (the stag-god) Runtiya of the Open Country shall trample terribly (?) / vigorously (?)’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:323).

1.1.5Stem

The adverb appears to be lexicalised from the nom./acc. pl. n. of a participle in /-mma/i-/; no other forms of the verb have so far been found attested.
