‘of one’s own, (subs.) possessions’1.1.1Transmission
This lexeme is found in a grave inscription datable to the reign of one of the three Artaxerxes, i.e. I (464-425/424), II (404-358), or III (358-338).

1.1.2Forms
| nom./acc. coll. (?) | sfẽnda | LW 2.12 (Sardis) | |
| dat. pl. | sfẽndaν | LW 2.9 (Sardis) |
Melchert 1991a:132f. interprets sfẽndaν correctly as dat. pl., the object of the infinitive verb arwol, contra Gusmani 1964a:204 (‘acc. sg.’). This is further supported by its agreement with karola(ν)=s, which can only be dative plural, since the accusative singular common gender would be expected to end in -lν (see Sasseville 2017a).
The first sequence of the sentence sfẽnda=k=mλ [..]ḷpụqid has been analyzed as sfẽnda(ν)=k=mλ, which is hardly cogent, since a dative plural would be at odds with the present dative singular pronoun =mλ. Therefore, we are perhaps dealing with a collective; cf. coll. laqriša=k.

1.1.3Meaning
On both contextual and comparative grounds with the verb sfẽni-(t) ‘to possess’, the meaning ‘possessions’ has been assigned and generally accepted (Meriggi 1935a:90, Carruba 1963a:388, Gusmani 1964a:204, Gusmani 1975d:167f., Melchert 1991a:132, Gérard 2005a:129, Sasseville 2018c:133). In LW 2.9, it refers to something belonging to the deceased, which should not be stolen from the tomb, thus the deceased’s possessions.

1.1.4Stem
The noun sfẽnd(i)- represents a substantivized adjective in -d(i)- derived from the noun sfẽn(i)- ‘one’s own, relative’. For the suffix, see Melchert 1991b:185 and the probability that it is mutated, see Sasseville 2017a.
