uteñnere(/i)-

‘(unknown)’

1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is attested once in the poetical inscription engraved on the lion sarcophagus of Antiphellos, dated on stylistic grounds to the beginning of the 4th century BCE (Zahle 1979a:318, Mühlbauer 2007a:91).

1.1.2Forms

nom. or dat. sg. (?) uteñneri TL 55.7 (Antiphellos)

1.1.3Graphic Features

There has been some speculation about whether the word should be segmented and how; cf. Shevoroshkin 2002c:407, Melchert (DLL:134), Schürr 2005a:154, Neumann 2007a:409. However, since none of the possibilities can be proven, the word is left as is for now; cf. under Stem for the possibility of a compound.

1.1.4Meaning

If uteñneri is a nominative, it would agree with abrala-, the subject of the sentence. However, if it is a dative singular, it could represent something or someone else, for which/whom the subject performs an action. Pending more evidence, nothing else can be said regarding the semantics or even the word category of uteñneri.

1.1.5Stem

Taken as a unitary word, uteñneri is likely to be a compound. The sequence -ñn- should reflect a recent assimilation. It may represent a compound made of ute- and ñnere/i-. The latter could be related to the family of Lyc. A ñne-(ti). If, however, the compound consists instead of ut- + eñnere/i-, the second member could be related to eñnẽ[ (N 331.2) or the place name ẽñnei. All these possibilities remain to be proven.

Regarding the nominal stem class of the lexeme, it depends on the grammatical assignment, which should be left open for now.
