1.2.1Transmission

This lexeme is attested in the inscription of the inscribed pillar of Xanthos, dated contextually to shortly after the ascension of Artaxerxes II in 405-404 BCE and stylistically to around 400 BCE (Borchhardt & Eichner 1997-1999a:19f.).

1.2.2Forms

nom. sg. or dat./loc. pl. (?) tẽpe TL 44d.63 (Xanthos)

As per Melchert (DLL:130) and Neumann 2007a:355, the case of tẽpe is unclear. It could be a nominative singular of a common gender e-stem or the dat./loc. plural of any stem (e.g. -e/i-, -e- or even -a-). Either analysis would fit the syntax of the passage, but see under Meaning.

1.2.4Meaning

The word tẽpe was rightly recognized as the derivational base of tm͂pewẽt(i)- (with syncope of the first syllable and syllabification of the nasal), although the obscure semantics of either lexeme do not provide decisive proof. Furthermore, it is unclear whether the word tẽpe belongs with the previous clause (i.e. with the predicate sladi) or with the following clause (i.e. with trbbẽniti). Shevoroshkin 1971a:209 suggests the meaning ‘people, community’ comparing tm͂pewẽt(i)-, which he translates similarly, based on the phrase trm͂milijẽti tm͂pewẽti, which is hardly a solid argumentation. Differently, Shevoroshkin 2011b:153 posits the meaning ‘elite’, which is likewise unfounded. No translation is given here.

1.2.5Stem

Serangeli 2019b:214 n. 28 is overly optimistic in seeing a mutated stem in -e/i- reflecting a τόμος-type formation. More synchronic evidence is needed.
