1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this word is based on that of its putative cognates /alant-/ ‘place’ and /alada-/ ‘place’ and somewhat tentative. With the choice of 〈la/i, lá/í〉 (signs *319 and *172), the vowel quality of the second syllable remains unclear just like in its cognates, and an alternative reading of the word as /aliwa-/ is possible as well.Yakubovich 2017c:16 leaves it open with his interpretation as /arlVwa-/, cf. the discussion of the stem below. The comparative evidence from CLuw. ārlanu(wa)-(i) ‘to replace’ and Lyd. arlil(i)- ‘household member’ strongly suggests that the HLuw. word should be considered to have contained an /r/, i.e. /arlawa-/, but similarly to all other members of the word family, the attested spellings do not contain any /r/ at all.

1.1.4Meaning

The meaning is assigned to this lexeme mainly on the basis of the connection with Lyd. arlil(i)- ‘household member’, which appears in a similar context, see Yakubovich 2017c:16. While agreeing with the link to /alant-/ ‘place’ and its family, Oreshko 2019a:92-94 maintains the previous, commonly held stance that the semantics of /alawa-/ remain unclear. Both attestations occur in the apodoses of curse formulae, with TELL AHMAR 6, §33 reading: *a-wa/i-tú-ta LOCUS-la/i-wa/i-za NEG3-sa CUM u-sa-la-li-ti, approx. /a=wa=du=tta alawanz nis anni usalalitti/, meaning ‘He (scil. the storm-god Tarhunt) shall not be benevolent(?) to his household members’ (cf. Hawkins 2006a:17). Additional evidence may result in a reappraisal of the semantics.

1.1.5Stem

Although the attested forms do not provide incontrovertible proof for it, this noun is likely a common gender a-stem. Yakubovich 2017c:16 analyses it as suffixed with the status suffix /-wa-/ (for which see Rieken & Sasseville 2014a:304f.) and formed from the same otherwise unattested stem */a(r)la-/ that has also given rise to the words for ‘place’ /alant-/ and /alada-/. For criticism of this analysis without suggesting an alternative, see Oreshko 2019a:93f. n. 26.
