1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this word remains unknown. It may or may not belong to the family around /ta-(i)/ ‘to stand’, but only additional textual data can verify that.

The combination of the logograms (sign *82) and a simplified (*212) is unique to this word and its single attestation. Yet, the pictographic quality of the combination appears to transport the semantic content quite clearly, cf. the discussion of the meaning below.

1.1.4Meaning

The tentative interpretation as ‘to cross’ was first advanced by Hrozný 1933a:367 (“traverser”) and has been followed by scholars since, cf. the remarks by Hawkins 2000a:457f. As the inscription the word appears in presents many challenges, further textual evidence is needed to verify the meaning. TOPADA, §20 reads: *a-wa/i7-tù ANNUS tara/i-zi/a TERRA-kwa/ix+ra/i ta-x(URBS) a-tax CRUS+FLUMEN-tax, approx. /a=wa=du ussin tarrinzi taskwari ta-… anta …-ta/, meaning ‘And in three years, he (scil. the Royal Horse mentioned in the preceding clause) crossed into the land of the town Ta-x’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:453).

1.1.5Stem

Unclear. Without a phonological interpretation available, nothing can be said about the stem. Even the ending may or may not be lenited.
