1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is attested in the inscription of the inscribed pillar of Xanthos, dated contextually to shortly after the ascension of Artaxerxes II in 405-404 BCE and stylistically to around 400 BCE (Borchhardt & Eichner 1997-1999a:19f.).

1.1.2Forms

acc. sg. (?)

eluwi

TL 44d.41 (Xanthos)

Differently, Melchert (DLL:114) interprets eluwi as dat. sg., which is also possible (likewise Shevoroshkin 2002a:219). The accusative is preferred here on account of the surrounding context, which seems to contain a series of direct objects all depending on the verbal form albaxã ‘I …-ed’. A verbal form of the 1sg. pres. act. in -wi instead of expected -u as per Shevoroshkin 1969a:257 (and Shevoroshkin 2014a:258) is highly unlikely.

1.1.3Meaning

Shevoroshkin 2014a:258 suggests an etymological connection with Lyc. B alba-, which is possible, but difficult to prove. No meaning has otherwise been given in the dictionaries (cf. DLL:114 and Neumann 2007a:57) and none will be suggested here.

1.1.4Stem

Melchert (DLL:114) compares the suffix -we/i- in eluwi with the one of Lyc. A xruwe/i-, Lyc. B plluwe/i- ‘from Pinara’. The derivational base remains unknown, although a root of the shape el- or al- should be sought; cf. Lyc. B al(i)-, Lyc. B alba-.
