Checked against the photograph in the Konkordanz (Mainzer Fotoarchiv). I am thankful to Susanne Görke for helping me decipher this fragmentary word properly.

1.1.4Meaning

The verb refers to an action that the bull in the sky performs in fall (as opposed to during the spring, if the words in question are correctly restored). Considering that a syncope in the first syllable may have occurred, which would cause a sequence *tK- to develop an epenthetic s, the root can be connected to the one of Pal. takkuwa(g)a-(di) ‘to show, display’ (I owe the etymological comparison to S. Görke). Thus, the verb would be expected to mean ‘to make an appearance, become visible (vel sim.)’. This is coherent with the context, since we know that the bull in the sky has been hidden.

1.1.5Stem

From a morphological perspective, zakkuwalliye/a- represents a denominative verb in -iye/a-(mi) derived from a non-attested noun *zakkuwalla- (i.e. a formation with the instrument suffix -alla- n. < *-ó-dhlo-; cf. Hitt. -alli- n.), which is in turn derived from the verb takkuwa(g)a-(di). For a parallel morphological chain in Hittite, see uddanalliye/a- ‘to treat magically, put a spell on’, i.e. uddan- ‘word’ → -alli- n. (instrument suffix) → -iye/a- (denom.); contra HEGU:131, the middle step is not the agent noun uttanala- c. ‘speaker’, which is built with the Hittite agent noun suffix -ala- c. (without a single -l-).

For the derivational base see Pal. takkuwa(g)a-(di).
