3sg. pres. act. medije N 324.26 (Xanthos)

Bousquet 1992a:185 compares medije with Lyc. B medijetike without further comment. Melchert (DLL:38) suggests an adjective medi(je)-, relating it to the ethnicon Medes (accepted by Gehrisch 2018a:199), which is not supported in any way as he himself concedes. Sasseville 2021a:420 posits a verb with an “unmarked” verbal form, for which see also on page 374f. This would be further supported by Lycian B medijeti=ke.

1.2.1Transmission

This lexeme is attested in the inscription of the inscribed pillar of Xanthos, dated contextually to shortly after the ascension of Artaxerxes II in 405-404 BCE and stylistically to around 400 BCE (Borchhardt & Eichner 1997-1999a:19f.).

1.2.3Graphic Features

The word is missing in DLL:120f. Schürr 2016d:157, 164 takes medijetike as a particle chain, i.e. me=d(e)=ije=ti=ke, which is untenable and not supported from the comparison with Lycian A medije. Gehrisch 2018a:88 wishes to see a dat./loc. pl. adjective in accordance with Melchert’s hypothesis of Lyc. A medije. However, an agreement with the preceding pere is not possible, because of the position of the clitic =ke. Sasseville 2021a:420 posits a verb medijeti=ke, which would be coordinated with the previous verb pubrati ‘he commissions’. The last suggestion accounts for a better syntactic analysis, although more evidence would be welcome.
