1.1.3Meaning

The lexeme maraza- was correctly identified as a title by Bugge 1897a:59f. and Torp 1901b:15. After the semantic elucidation of Lycian A mara- ‘law’ through the trilingual inscription, maraza- was interpreted as ‘judge’ or ‘magistrate’ (Carruba 1977a:312, Heubeck 1982a:110). Finally, after a detailed analysis of the context, Melchert 1993e:32 has argued convincingly that this specific context calls for the more precise meaning ‘arbiter’ rather than ‘judge’.

[D.S.]

1.1.4Stem

The word maraza (TL 44c.4) was correctly parsed by Meriggi 1937a:509 as a nominative singular of an a-stem.
