1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

Most of the phonological interpretation of this word should be understood as tentative, and only the stem ending in /°zza-/ appears to be secure. The spelling gives no hint as to the quality of the vowel before /°zza-/, but if the analysis of the stem is correct (cf. the discussion of the stem below), it should be /-azza-/. As for the beginning of the word read as /sal-/, see the discussion at HLuw. /sal(i)-/ ‘opponent, prosecutor’.

1.1.4Meaning

The word is attested twice in very fragmented contexts, and the semantic assignment is therefore mostly based on the family the word belongs to as well as its morphology. In MARAŞ 6, l.1 runs: […] á-p[a-sa?]-za-a FRATER.LA-za (FEMINA)na-na-sa5+ra/i-za-ha LIS-z[a]-sa (LOQUI)la+ra/i+a-ta, approx. /… abassanz …-nanz nanasranz=ha salizzas laratta/, which may mean ‘The aggressive one was blessed? (above?/for?/to?) his brothers and sisters’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:278), however, the inscription does not provide any further hints as to the context, since the following line contains no fully preserved words and the fragment breaks off afterwards.

1.1.5Stem

Even though the word is attested only in poorly preserved inscriptions, its inflection is clearly nominal and that of a common gender a-stem noun. That fits well with the agent noun suffix /-azza-/ (see Sasseville 2014-2015a:107f.), which can attach to nominal and verbal stems alike.A different interpretation is advanced by Yakubovich 2013b regarding the forms in /-azza-/, which he views as comparatives and superlatives, i.e. ‘most aggressive (one)’.
