‘(unknown)’

1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is attested in the inscription of the inscribed pillar of Xanthos, dated contextually to shortly after the ascension of Artaxerxes II in 405-404 BCE and stylistically to around 400 BCE (Borchhardt & Eichner 1997-1999a:19f.).

nom./acc. pl. n. sxxaija TL 44d.23 (Xanthos)

The attestation follows DLL:129.

1.1.3Graphic Features

The separation of the segment sxxaijakuti into sxxaija and kuti is generally accepted; cf. DLL:129, Neumann 2007a:323, Gehrisch 2018a:90f., but skeptical Schürr 2018b:80. The ellipsis (a)sxxaija suggested by Shevoroshkin 1969a:251 is possible but does not have any advantage at present.

1.1.4Meaning

No meaning is assigned by DLL:129, Neumann 2007a:323, Schürr 2018b:80 or Gehrisch 2018a:90f.

Shevoroshkin 2012a:466 suggests an etymological connection with Hitt. šaḫḫan- ‘obligation, service’ (and Luw. /sahhan-/) and translates it accordingly; see Shevoroshkin 2014a:240 ‘dues’. The root etymology is phonologically possible, but contextually and morphologically difficult to prove. More evidence is needed.

1.1.5Stem

The word sxxaija is best interpreted as an adjective in -ai(je)- (substantivized) in the neuter plural.
