TELL AHMAR 6, §18 (Tell Ahmar)

In TELL AHMAR 6, 5§18, the attestation of the word is followed by the clitic 〈-ha〉, i.e. /=ha/ ‘and’. The reading of sign *41 as 〈tì〉 rather than as 〈tà〉 as in the editio princeps (Hawkins 2006a:14, 26) follows Simon 2019f:330.

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of the lexeme can be regarded as reasonably certain despite its status as a hapax legomenon. It belongs to the word family around the verb /hwiya-(i)/ ‘to run’ and further involves several well-known suffixes, see the discussion of the stem below. Rieken 2008b:642 has shown that the sign *41, mostly read 〈tà〉 representing /da/, is used deliberately here to indicate the lenis quality of the dental; the additional reading 〈tì〉, i.e. /di/, has now been proposed by Simon 2019f:330.

1.1.4Meaning

The meaning is assigned somewhat tentatively, mainly based on the morphological structure of the form. It belongs to the word family around the verb /hwiya-(i)/ ‘to run’ and represents an abstract noun in /-ahid-/, cf. the derivational chain proposed in the discussion of the stem below. In TELL AHMAR 6, the assigned meaning is supported by the context, as becomes clear in the relevant clause in §18: *a-wa/i-ma-sa LITUUS+na-hi-i-tì (VIA)hu-sa-la-hi-tì-ha wa/i+ra/i-li-tà, approx. /a=wa=mu=as manahidi hussallahidi=ha warallida/, meaning ‘And he adopted me in vision and readiness to run’ (cf. Hawkins 2006a:15, 26). Possible future evidence may help to refine the assigned meaning further.

1.1.5Stem

The word is related to the verb /hwiya-(i)/ ‘to walk, run’, likewise a derivation and also ultimately based on an unattested root */hu-/ of similar semantics (cf. Sasseville 2021a:406f.). For the present lexeme, a derivational chain of */huwa-(di)/ → imperfective verb */hussa-(i)/In fact, it is probably the frequently used suffix /-ssa-/ that is the reason for the spelling of /hussallahid-/ appearing to form an exception to the rule, which sees 〈sà〉 used after /u/ representing /ʃ/ as proposed by Rieken 2010b:656. → agent noun */hussalla-/ ‘runner’ → abstract noun /hussallahid-/ ‘readiness to run’ is assumed here.

It is questionable whether the formation of this noun was still transparent to contemporary speakers of HLuw. at the time, because all remaining members of the word family are derived from /hwiya-(i)/ and the reduplicated verb /hwihwa-(i)/, both meaning ‘to run’, including the imperfective /hwihwassa-(i)/ ‘to march’ vel sim.
