1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this word is generally seen as secure because of the full cognate in CLuw. ḫudarli(ya)- ‘of servant, belonging to a slave’. While the HLuw. spelling in theory permits another interpretation as well, viz. /hudarlai(ya)-/, this shape of the stem is unsupported by the Cuneiform Luwian equivalent.

1.1.4Meaning

Despite a mere two attestations, the meaning of this word is clear, as it represents an adjective of appurtenance derived from the noun /hudarl(i)-/ ‘servant’. Moreover, it has a direct cognate in CLuw. ḫudarli(ya)- ‘of servant, belonging to a slave’. Both HLuw. attestations of this word appear in the same inscription, and both are used in very similar contexts, viz. an extended noun phrase that includes a considerable number of modifiers expressing possession. MALPINAR, §5 runs: wa/i-t[a-a] z[a-ti] á-mi Iá-lá/í-ia-za-sa-na HATTUSA+LI-sa-na SERVUS-la/i-ia STATUA-ru-ti-i OVIS(ANIMA)-ti PRAE-i (“*69”)sa-sa-tu-u, approx. /wa=tta zatti ammi Arrayazzassan Hattusilissan hudarliya tarudi hawadi pari sasantu/, meaning ‘They shall present to this statue, (that) of mine, (i.e.) of Arrayazza, Hattusili’s servant, with a sheep’ (lit.: to this my Arrayazz-ean Hattusil-ean servant-y statue; cf. Hawkins 2000a:341-343). It is typical for such nested possessives to be coded as adjectives in HLuw., see Bauer 2014a:182f.

1.1.5Stem

The commonly assumed shape of the lexeme as /hudarli(ya)-/ shows an adjective in /-i(ya)-/ derived from the i-mutated noun /hudarl(i)-/.Outdated Melchert 1990a:201, cf. †ḫūtarlā- and CLuw. kummai(ya)- ´pure, sacralized´.

1.2.4Meaning

The only occurrence of a syllabic spelling duplicates with a Sumerographic one; cf.:

[na-a-ni-ia-an (nin-i)]a-an    ḫu-tar-li-i-i[(a-an         géme-ia-an)]      (KUB 35.49 i 7’)

šeš-ia-an        nin-ia-an        arad-ia-an                 géme-ia-an         (KUB 35.45 ii 2f.)

‘of the brother and sister, of the male servant and female servant.’

The first attempt to equate ḫu-tar-li-i-i[a-an] at KUB 35.49 i 7’ with Sumerographic šeš-ia-an ‘brother’ at the parallel KUB 35.45 ii 3 by Otten 1953a:97f. (followed HW:384 and Friedrich 1955b:1f.) was caused by an insufficient restoration of the former manuscript. A few years later, Laroche 1958b:192f. corrected this, inspired by the correspondence of Lyc. A nẽne/i- ‘brother’ and CLuw. *nān(i)- (Sumerographic šeš). Consequently, he determined arad-ia-an as the equivalent of ḫu-tar-li-i-i[a-an], hence the meaning assignment ‘servant’ (HW:424, DLL:49, Shevoroshkin 1969a:266, Weitenberg 1984a:418 n. 188). Finally, in 1982, Carruba 1982a:35-40 recognized the adjectivizing force of final -iya- in the whole passage, which entails for ḫutarli(ya)- a meaning ‘related to the servant’, generally accepted as, e.g., in Melchert 1990a:201, CLL:78, HHw:s.v., EDHIL:365f., García Ramón 2016a:73.

1.2.5Stem

Following Carruba 1982a:35-40 and Melchert 1990a:201, it is now commonly agreed that ḫutarli(ya)- is an adjectival derivative of *ḫūtarl(i)- (no longer attested as †ḫūtarlā-, see under ḫūtarlānn(i)-).

[E.R.]

For the derivational base see CLuw. *ḫūtarl(i)-.
