1.1.4Meaning ‘the one who has the status of a servant’

Adiego 1995a:24f., Adiego 2019b:31 convincingly compared qdarĺou with CLuw. ḫūtarlā- ‘servant’ (as well as with its forms as personal names) and derived it from earlier *ḫudarlawa- with a suffix -wa- based on either an adjective *ḫutarla- or a noun *ḫutarlā- His analysis is generally accepted (Schürr 2010c:201; Simon 2011b:543f.; Brosch 2016a:8; Rieken & Sasseville 2014a:309) and needs only some minor updates: On the phonological side note that Carian q is the regular reflex of the laryngeal preceding an *u (Simon 2011b:544f., Simon 2017f:387) and the assimilation *rl > r proposed by Schürr 2010c:200f. is not necessary anymore due to the new identification of the fifth letter, see under Graphic features. On the morphological side, the proposed base ḫūtarlā- ‘servant’ is probably not attested yet as a substantive (see the discussion s.v. ḫūtarlānn(i)-), but its existence is clear from its diminutive ḫūtarlānn(i)- and from its usage as personal name (see s.v. *ḫūtarla-). Finally, the suffix -wa- was analysed in the meanwhile by Rieken & Sasseville 2014a, arguing that qdarĺou means ‘the one who has the status of the slave’ (Rieken & Sasseville 2014a:309).
