lide

‘(unknown)’

1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is attested in the inscription of the inscribed pillar of Xanthos, dated contextually to shortly after the ascension of Artaxerxes II in 405-404 BCE and stylistically to around 400 BCE (Borchhardt & Eichner 1997-1999a:19f.).

1.1.2Forms

3sg. pret. ind. act. lide TL 44d.40 (Xanthos)

The grammatical interpretation is not certain. Melchert (DLL:120) cautiously treats lide as a noun in the dat./loc. pl., but admits that this is far from certain. The verbal interpretation follows Shevoroshkin 1971a:220 and Schürr 2018b:71. The subject of the verb is perhaps lbijẽi.

1.1.3Graphic Features

There is general consensus that lidebe is made of lide + =be (particle).

1.1.4Meaning

Shevoroshkin 1971a:220 translates Lyc. B lide as ‘he pacified’ because of an etymological comparison with Hitt. lilā(i)-(mi) ‘to pacify’ (Shevoroshkin 1969a:257). This is, however, both phonologically and morphologically problematic; see under Stem.

1.1.5Stem

If lide is a verbal form, it could be a verb in -(e)i-(di). In any case, the root can hardly be anything else then le- or li-. More evidence is needed.
