warasije-

‘(unknown)’

1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is found in the inscription of the inscribed pillar of Xanthos, dated contextually to shortly after the ascension of Artaxerxes II in 405-404 BCE and stylistically to around 400 BCE (Borchhardt & Eichner 1997-1999a:19f.).

1.1.2Forms

nom. or acc. pl. (?) warasijez TL 44d.70 (Xanthos)

Melchert (DLL:134) sees it as an accusative plural (tentatively also Neumann 2007a:417). Schürr 2018b:85 prefers a nominative plural. Shevoroshkin 2014a:257 suggests a vocative plural. Further evidence is needed.

1.1.3Meaning

A relation to the Hittite and Luwian root warr- ‘to help’ is possible but cannot be proven (pace Korolev & Shevoroshkin 1969a:540, Neumann 2007a:417, Gehrisch 2018a:96). Shevoroshkin 2014a:257 maintains this etymological connection for warasijez and still claims that it refers to helping troops during a war, but this is very speculative. There are other war(r)- roots in Anatolian, which is why we prefer to leave the meaning open until further evidence emerges.

1.1.4Stem

Sasseville 2021a:206f. posits a stem in -e- c. (which he equates to Pal. and CLuw. stems in -aḫ-i- c.), derived from a non-attested *warasija-. Differently, Schürr 2018b:85 suggests a compound comparing Lyc. A mesijas, which is unmotivated.
