Checked against the photographs in the Mainzer Fotoarchiv. – For the emendation of
ku-wa-〈ia〉-ta-i at KBo 4.14 iii 42, see HED K:302 and Sasseville 2021a:348. The reverse scribal mistake with an erroneous insertion of {ia} is found in the same text in the synonym verb naḫḫuwa-(i) (see under Lemma).

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation
⸢
⸣ku-wa-ia-ta-du at KBo 4.14 iii 46 shows a defective spelling of the ending, which must feature the unlenited allomorph in the class of -a-(i) verbs (Sasseville 2021a:348).

1.1.4Meaning
The meaning ‘to worry, to be concerned (for)’was first recognized by Friedrich 1947a:304f. by contextual analysis and the usage, which is parallel to that of the gloss wedge-marked verb naḫḫuwa- ‘to worry’ in the same text; cf. KBo 4.14 iii 42-46:

⸣ku-wa-ia-ta-du
“And [i]f it worries the king thus: (What) if there remained no groom(?)/stable man(?), there would be no one there who would harness the horses? (What) if there were no house, where one could go in? Then, at that time, there should be even more concern to you for the life of the king” (CHD Š:547, see also Stefanini 1965a:46, most recently Fuscagni 2014a, with references).
The verb is used in an impersonal construction with the experiencer expressed in the dat./loc. Later, Güterbock 1956a:139 n. 2 (followed in DLL:58f.) extended the basic semantic interpretation ‘craindre’ to the other members of the word family, superseding the other analyses of Friedrich 1947a:305f. The translation as given has entered the handbooks (HW:122, 331, 357 and 425, HEG A-K:685f., CLL:118, HED K:301f., Ünal 2007a:384, HHw:s.v., CHD Š:547, Sasseville 2021a:348).

1.1.5Stem
On the classification as a ḫi-verb arisen by a univerbation of dat./loc. of an abstract noun *kuwaya- c. ‘fear’ with the reconstructed root verb *ta- ‘to put’, see Sasseville 2021a:348.
[E.R.]
1.1.6Origin
On account of the gloss wedges and the cognate Hieroglyphic Luwian stem /kwaya-(i)/, kwa/i-i(a)- verb ‘to fear, revere’, Laroche (in DLL:58f., with a reading now outdated) recognized the Luwian origin of kuwayata-(i) ‘to worry, to be concern (for)’. It is confirmed by the abl. ku-wa-ia-ta-ti at KBo 29.51, 2 in Luwian context and, equally important, by the dialectal Luwian sound change *du̯- > kw-. The lexeme is also listed as Luwian in HW:357 (with question mark), HEG A-K:685f., CLL:118, HED K:301f., Melchert 2005a:451, van den Hout 2006a:240, 241 and 245, HHw:s.v., Sasseville 2021a:348.

2. Reconstruction
2.1Reconstruction
The verb kuwayata-(i) has been analyzed as a univerbation of dative/locative singular of an abstract noun *kuwaya- c. ‘fear’ (< *du̯Ei̯-eh2-) with the reconstructed root verb *ta-(i) ‘to put, place’ (< *dhóh1-/dhh1-´), see Sasseville 2021a:348. He also compares the Hittite similar case werit(e)-(mi) ‘to stand in awe’. This analysis is supported by the observation that there is otherwise no denominative suffix **-a-(i) in Luwian, which would not support a denominal origin of the word.
