1.1.1Transmission

The reading of this lexeme is not assured, but if it is correct, the putative word †ãla should be marked as a ghost word. The recovered word qãna- is found once in the poetical inscription engraved on the lion sarcophagus of Antiphellos, dated on stylistic grounds to the beginning of the 4th century BCE (Zahle 1979a:318, Mühlbauer 2007a:91).

1sg. pres. ind. act. ?ãṇ?aụ? TL 55.5 (Antiphellos)

1.1.3Graphic Features

The word referred to in the table was read by Kalinka 1901a:54 as ãla ụki (cf. Neumann 2007a:33, DLL:113). Schürr 2005a:122 updates the reading to ãla : xi. According to our own autopsy and photograph, there could be one more letter before the ã, i.e. ?. Further, the reading , which yields the non-tolerated sequence -ãl-, is instead to be read as (as acknowledged by Arkwright 1899a:61). Furthermore, we also read the very much damaged letter at the end, which was abandoned by Schürr 2005a:127, who finds the damaged spot too small to be an “o” (not cogent!). Overall, we suggest the reading ?ãṇ?aụ?, which could be supported in comparison to Lyc. B qã[.]ã. Furthermore, this reading has the advantage of recovering a predicate for the clause, which was otherwise missing.

1.1.4Meaning

If the reading postulated above is correct, the word would be a denominative verb in -a-(ti) or -a(i)-(di) and take epe palarã ‘portrait (?)’ as direct object, further modified by xi ‘offering’, most likely standing in apposition to palarã. Without an etymological approach, however, it is difficult to assess the semantics of the verb. Further evidence is needed.
