‘to drag (?)’

1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is found in the inscription of the inscribed pillar of Xanthos, dated contextually to shortly after the ascension of Artaxerxes II in 405-404 BCE and stylistically to around 400 BCE (Borchhardt & Eichner 1997-1999a:19f.).

1.1.2Forms

3sg. pret. ind. act. qttide TL 44d.7-8 (Xanthos)

1.1.3Graphic Features

The separation of qttideziti into qttide ziti is supported by the existence of the independent substantive zit(i)- ‘end (?)’. Moreover, the clause needs a predicate, for which qttide is the only candidate. Contra Schürr 2018b:79, who wishes to see the verbal form in ziti instead.

1.1.4Meaning

The context in which qttide occurs is difficult to understand, because the meaning of several words of the clause is unclear. Shevoroshkin 2014a:251 compares it to Hitt. ḫuittiye/a-(mi) ‘to pull, drag’, which is phonologically and morphologically adequate, translating qttide with ‘he dragged, removed (?)’ (phonologically outdated is his comparison with Hitt. ḫatt-(mi) ‘to pierce’ in Shevoroshkin 1977a:135, cited in Neumann 2007a:308 and followed by Gehrisch 2018a:90). Unfortunately, the meaning of the probable direct object zawa (or alb(a)) is obscure, preventing us from verifying the semantics obtained from the etymological perspective. No meaning is offered by Melchert (DLL:127f.) or by Schürr 2018b:79.

1.1.5Stem

The form qttide could belong to an causative-iterative in -(e)i-(di) or to a deradical formation in -i-(di). For the latter class in Luwian and Lydian, see Sasseville 2021a:319-335.

1.1.6Origin

No reconstruction is offered due to the highly uncertain semantic assignment. Nevertheless, for a potential etymology, see under Meaning.
