1.1.2Forms

3sg. pres. ind. act. (?) a-ap-pu-u-i KUB 35.153, 4’ (CTH 754, NS)
  a-pu-u-i KUB 35.153, 7’ (CTH 754, NS)
  ˹a-ap˺-p[u-u-i] KUB 60.92, 7’ (CTH 754, NS)
3sg. pret. ind. act. ˹a?-pu-uz˺-za(=) KBo 60.236 iv? 3’ (CTH 754, NS)

Due to the fragmentary state of the attestations, the grammatical interpretation of these words listed in the table above should be considered tentative. Concerning āppūi, a verbal form in the 3rd singular present of the ḫi-conjugation is appealing, although a dative singular in -i or even an adposition cannot be entirely excluded. The form a-ap-pu-u-i-la-az-[ … ] (KUB 35.153, 6’), an apparent derivative of āppūi, is somewhat obscure, but it implies a nominal derivation in -ili- derived from the base āppū-. The other attestation found in the sequence ˹a?-pu-uz˺-za-ti-<it>-˹ta˺ is best interpreted as a verbal form ending in -t combined with an s-epenthesis triggered by the following reflexive particle =ti, i.e. aput + =ti + =tta > apuzz(a)=ti=tta. The same sandhi phenomenon occurs in the preceding line, see Pal. išḫa-. This attestation supports the verbal interpretation put forward for the attestations of āppūi.

1.1.4Meaning

The context of the two fragments KUB 35.153 and KUB 60.92 has something to do with ‘thriving’. The word āppū- seems to be the base of Pal. appuzzi- c. ‘fat, tallow’ (= Hitt. appuzzi- n.), which in turn would be the base of p/wūzzanni- ‘sheep fat’. This etymological connection, however, sheds little light on the meaning of the absolute base āppū-.
