1.1.3Meaning

Meriggi 1935a:109 n. 97 suggests a connection with cawλo- with an alternation between c and τ, which has been rejected by Gusmani 1964a:107f. As Sasseville 2021a:520f. observes, the alternation between word initial c and word internal τ is independently supported. If the semantic interpretation of cawλo- as ‘soul of the deceased’ is correct, ẽnτawλo- must mean approximately the same, although the significance of the addition of the prefix ẽn- eludes us. From a contextual perspective, the posited meaning ‘soul of the deceased’ is adequate, since ẽnτawλoλ represents the one for whom a funerary stele is protected.
