1.1.2Forms

2sg. pres. ind. act. ti-i-ia-ša-at-ti KUB 26.32 i 2 (CTH 124, LNS)

In Melchert 2005a:451, the word is interpreted as a noun tiyašštt(i)-, but this is retracted by Melchert (pers. comm.), who now agrees to its verbal status. Laroche 1953b:75 suggested tentatively a Luwian verbal or adjectival formation. A verbal formation in -aša-(i) is suggested by Sasseville 2021a:502 (following Melchert pers. comm.), who further points out that the single -š- in the suffix is a typical Luwian feature.

1.1.3Meaning

Melchert (apud Sasseville ibid.) suggests interpreting tiyaša-(i) as a derivative of the newly recognized Luwian verb ti(ya)- ‘to step’, which is confirmed from a contextual perspective; for which see Sasseville 2021a:502. For other critical editions of the passage, cf. also Laroche 1953b:74f. and Giorgieri 1995a:278-280.

1.1.4Origin

The Luwian origin of tiyašatti is supported by its analysis as a verbal formation in -aša-(i). It was also included in the list of Luwianism of Melchert 2005a.

[D.S.]

For the derivational base see Luw. ti(ya)-.
