1.1.2Forms

2sg. impv. act. ti-i-ia KUB 35.133 iv 12’ (CTH 665, LNS)

We owe the unitary paradigm presented here (as in Sasseville 2021a:325f.) to our collaboration with Craig Melchert. The form ti-i-ta (KUB 35.133 iii 6) has been previously identified with ti-ta-aḫ-ḫ[a (KBo 8.17, 4’) as in Laroche 1959a:98 (also see CLuw. tīta-), which is formally possible. Its assignment to the same paradigm as ti-i-ia would be more attractive from the comparative perspective with the context of ti-i-ia, but cannot be proven either due to the fragmentary state of the context.

1.1.3Meaning

The meaning ‘to take a step’ suggested in Sasseville 2021a:325f. is supported both by the contexts and the etymological connection with Hitt. tiye/a-(mi) ‘to step’, which we owe to Craig Melchert. No semantic assignment had been previously assigned to these words; cf. DLL:98, CLL:228, 230.

1.1.4Stem

If the same ti-i-ta belongs here, it would prove the lenition of the verb in question. On the other hand, the lenition is made probable by the imperative ending in -iya, for which see Sasseville 2021a:320f.

2. Reconstruction

2.1Reconstruction ‘to step’

If one equates Luw. ti(ya)-(di)? ‘to take a step (?)’ with Hitt. tiye/a-(mi) ‘to step’, a Proto-Anatolian formation in *-i̯e/o- derived from the root *steh2- can be reconstructed, i.e. *steh2-i̯e/o. The shape of the Hittite verb implies that the accent was on the suffix, i.e. *sth2-i̯é/ó-. However, this would not have triggered lenition in Luwian, which is why Sasseville 2021a:326 suggests that the syllabification of the glide in Proto-Anatolian may have played a role due to the otherwise absence of a root syllable, i.e. *sth2íi̯e-di, which would allow for the ending to lenite between unaccented syllable.
