/assunu(wa)-(i)/, a-su-nu-

‘to make good (?)’

1.1.1Transmission

This verb occurs twice in the HLuw. corpus. One of its attestations can be found in an inscription from Karkamiš, dating to the late 9th or early 8th century BCE, whereas the other one occurs in one of the Assur letters, whose origin remains uncertain, but which can be dated to the late 8th century BCE.

2sg. impv. act. /assunu/ a-su-nu ASSUR letter f+g, §5
1sg. pret. ind. act. /assunuhha/ [á]-su-[x]-ha-a KARKAMIŠ A24a2+3, §4 (Karkamiš)

The attribution of the form attested in KARKAMIŠ A24a2+3, §4 is to be understood as tentative, since much of the context is fragmented, cf. Hawkins 2000a:136.

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

Despite the likely etymological link with Hittite aššu- ‘good’, the phonological interpretation of the present lemma remains somewhat tentative. The HLuw. spelling permits a reading as /assunu-/ or as /asnu-/, and the language probably made use of both, cf. Sasseville 2021a:473. As a matter of fact, parallel variants are attested for the Hittite cognate aš(ša)nu- ‘to take care of; to provide’.

1.1.4Meaning

The semantic interpretation of this verb (cf. Hawkins 2000a:136, 549, followed by Sasseville 2021a:473) rests mainly on its morphological analysis, because both contexts of attestation are either too fragmented (KARKAMIŠ A24a2+3, §4) or unclear (ASSUR letter f+g, §5) to yield many clues. Further evidence is needed to verify its exact meaning.

[AH.B.]

1.1.5Stem

The verb is a denominal formation in /-nu(wa)-(i)/, likely with causative meaning. The likely derivational base */assu-/ is unattested in HLuw., but well-known from Hittite (Hawkins 2000a:549, followed by Sasseville 2021a:473).
